School leaders identify school safety as one of the most pressing challenges they face today. But how can you measure and address the factors related to school climate and safety and the effect it has on students?

One way is by creating and maintaining two-way communication with families. Ask them to help you and make improving school climate a team effort.

• Maintain open communication channels with parents and families.
• Host events that foster family involvement in their students’ schooling.
• Be alert to, and seek to avoid/minimize, strategies or practices that may be in opposition to any cultural values or beliefs families may hold.
